Aydın is a province and city in Turkey's Aegean region, nestled in the fertile Büyük Menderes (Meander) River valley. The city of Aydın — sometimes called the 'fig capital of the world' — sits amid orchards producing the globally prized Söke and Çakıllı dried figs, alongside olives and cotton. The province is an extraordinary concentration of ancient Greek and Roman cities: Aphrodisias (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Priene, Miletus, Didyma, Magnesia on the Meander, Alabanda, Nysa, and the ancient ruins of Tralleis within the modern city itself. The Aegean coast fringes the western edge of the province, with Kuşadası offering beach resort life and ferry access to Samos, and Didim housing the monumental Temple of Apollo at Didyma. Lake Bafa National Park provides a serene wetland escape, while the Büyük Menderes valley offers fertile agricultural landscapes. Aydın city itself is a relaxed Aegean provincial capital with a lively bazaar, Ottoman mosques, and a warm Mediterranean character.

Buy a Müze Kart museum pass (~400 TRY/~$12 USD) if visiting multiple archaeological sites — it covers Aphrodisias, Priene, Miletus, and Didyma and allows unlimited re-entry, so you can return for different light without paying twice.
Arrive at Aphrodisias and Priene at opening time (08:00–08:30). Both sites receive heavy tour-bus traffic from 10:00 onwards. An early arrival gives you the ruins largely to yourself for the best two hours of light.
At Lake Bafa, bring rubber boots or waterproof shoes for the shoreline. The best flamingo compositions require wading slightly into the reed margins. The D525 lakeside road provides pull-off spots for road-level views across the water.
A polarising filter is non-negotiable for Aegean coastal shots. Rotate it until the sea transitions from silver-white glare to deep turquoise-blue. Polarisers work best when the sun is roughly 90 degrees to your shooting direction.
Didyma columns are up to 19.7 m tall. Use a tilt-shift or wide-angle lens and move far back to reduce converging verticals — or shoot from an elevated position such as the surrounding platform.
For bird photography at Lake Bafa, arrive before dawn and wait in a fixed position rather than moving along the shore. Flamingos will flush if approached directly. Use a telephoto of at least 400mm for frame-filling shots.
The Büyük Menderes valley is excellent for drone photography but check Turkish civil aviation authority (SHGM) regulations — many archaeological buffer zones prohibit UAV flights. Always ask at site entrances before launching.
In Aydın bazaar and Karacasu market, ask before photographing individuals. A smile, a few words of Turkish (İzin verir misiniz? — May I take your photo?), and genuine interest in their goods will usually get a warm yes. Buying something small first builds rapport.
Priene theatre sits on a steep hillside — the climb to the upper rows takes 15–20 minutes. The elevated view looking south over the Meander plain is the strongest wide composition. Bring water and wear grip-soled shoes.
Spring (April–May) is generally the best all-round season: wildflowers add colour to ruins, flamingo numbers are high at Lake Bafa, Dilek Peninsula is uncrowded, and temperatures are comfortable for long shooting sessions on exposed sites.
