Balıkesir is a diverse northwestern Turkish province straddling the Marmara and Aegean regions, encompassing mythological Kaz Dağları (Mount Ida), olive-grove-lined coastal towns, thermal springs, and ferry connections to Istanbul. The province blends rural Anatolian culture with Aegean coastal charm.
Balıkesir province spans two climate zones. The Aegean coast (Ayvalık, Edremit) enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers (July average 32°C) and mild, rainy winters. The inland areas and Kaz Dağları (Mount Ida) experience cooler temperatures year-round, with snowfall possible from December to March above 500m. Bandırma on the Marmara coast has slightly wetter winters than the Aegean coast. The best travel seasons are May–June and September–October.
