Kaputaş Beach

  • VibeDramatic cliff-flanked cove, turquoise water, intimate
  • Distance20 min from Kaş
  • Difficultyhard

Kaputaş Beach sits at the foot of a dramatic limestone gorge between the towns of Kaş and Kalkan on Turkey's Antalya coast, roughly 7 kilometres west of Kaş.

Tiny stunning beach wedged between towering limestone cliffs where brilliant turquoise Mediterranean water meets white pebbles. Reached by descending 187 steps from the coastal highway — physically demanding but rewards with postcard-perfect scenery.

Kaputaş Beach sits at the foot of a dramatic limestone gorge between the towns of Kaş and Kalkan on Turkey's Antalya coast, roughly 7 kilometres west of Kaş. The beach is tiny by Aegean standards — approximately 80 metres long and no more than 30 metres deep — but the combination of near-vertical white cliffs, a small turquoise river mouth running from the Kaputaş Gorge, and the brilliant Mediterranean water creates one of the most striking natural cove settings in Turkey.

The floor is fine white pebble grading to coarser material near the waterline, and the water colour is an intense turquoise that photography does not exaggerate. Depth increases quickly from the shoreline, so the beach is less suited to very young or non-swimming children but is excellent for confident swimmers and snorkellers. The surf can pick up when northerly Aegean winds funnel through the gorge, making conditions variable and occasionally choppy outside of calm summer days. On flat summer mornings the water is glassy, and snorkelling visibility can reach 10–15 metres.

Access requires descending approximately 187 concrete steps from the D400 coastal highway above. A small car park sits alongside the road (free as of 2025, though this may change seasonally), and dolmuş buses between Kaş and Kalkan stop nearby on request. The descent takes around 5 minutes for most visitors but is steep, with no lift or ramp alternative.

Amenities are intentionally minimal. A small kiosk at the base of the steps sells snacks and cold drinks and rents basic sun loungers. Toilets and a freshwater shower are available. No large restaurants operate at the beach itself; the surrounding cliff face prevents additional development. The limited space means the beach becomes very crowded from around 11 am to 3 pm during July and August — arriving before 10 am or after 4 pm dramatically improves the experience.

Boat tours from Kaş harbour sometimes stop at Kaputaş as part of wider coastal itineraries, approaching from the water and avoiding the steps entirely. The surrounding cliff scenery makes this one of the most photographed coves in Turkey.

  • Stunning turquoise cove framed by 100 m limestone cliffs — one of Turkey's most striking small beach settings
  • Crystal-clear water with excellent snorkelling visibility reaching 10–15 metres on calm days
  • Tiny Kaputaş gorge river mouth creates a freshwater-seawater mix zone at the beach edge
  • Accessible from the coastal highway via 187 steps cut into the gorge wall — dramatic arrival
  • Reachable by boat from Kaş harbour, bypassing the steps and viewing the cliffs from sea level

Tips for visiting

  • Arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm — the beach is tiny and peak-hour crowds (11 am–3 pm) in July and August leave very little space
  • Dolmuş between Kaş and Kalkan stop near the top of the steps on request — ask for Kaputaş plajı
  • Wear rubber-soled shoes for the descent and the pebbled shoreline, which becomes slippery when wet
  • The beach can turn rough on windy days — check sea conditions before making the steep descent, especially with children
  • Boat day trips from Kaş usually include a stop at Kaputaş, offering an alternative to the staircase approach

When to visit

May and early June offer calm seas, manageable crowds, and good photography light before the peak summer rush. September combines warm water with reduced visitor numbers. Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid the intense midday crowding in July and August.

Accessibility

Kaputaş Beach requires descending approximately 187 steep concrete steps from the road; there is no lift, ramp, or alternative route. The beach is not accessible for wheelchair users or visitors with significant mobility limitations. The pebbled shoreline and rapid depth increase also present difficulties for those with limited movement.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is access to Kaputaş Beach?

Visitors must descend approximately 187 steep concrete steps from the coastal highway. The descent takes around 5 minutes but there is no lift or alternative route, making access very challenging for those with limited mobility or young children in strollers.

Is there parking at Kaputaş Beach?

A small parking area sits alongside the D400 coastal highway above the beach. It fills quickly in peak summer mornings — arriving before 9 am is advisable in July and August.

Is Kaputaş safe for swimming?

The water is clear and suitable for confident swimmers and snorkellers. Depth increases quickly from the shoreline, and surf can build on windy days. Young or non-swimming children should be carefully supervised. No permanent lifeguard service is in place.

Can visitors arrive by boat?

Yes — day-tour boats from Kaş harbour often include Kaputaş as a stop, anchoring offshore and landing passengers by dinghy. This approach avoids the staircase and offers a different perspective on the cliff scenery.

Are there restaurants at Kaputaş Beach?

Only a small kiosk at the foot of the steps offers snacks and cold drinks. Visitors planning a long day should carry food and water. The nearest restaurants are in Kaş (7 km) or Kalkan (10 km).
