Gümüşhane Culture & Customs Guide 2026

How to read Gümüşhane: the customs, manners, and unwritten rules that make visits smoother.

Gümüşhane is a small city and provincial capital in northeastern Turkey, nestled in the Pontic Mountains at an elevation of about 1,200 metres. The name means 'silver house' in Turkish, a nod to the region's rich history of silver and copper mining that attracted Ottoman attention for centuries. The city lies along the Harşit River valley, surrounded by forested peaks that reach over 3,000 metres. Despite its modest size — the city proper numbers roughly 31,000 people — Gümüşhane Province holds extraordinary historical depth, from the Roman legionary fortress of Satala to medieval Georgian churches and Ottoman mosques. Winters are cold and snowy, making the Zigana Pass a regional ski destination, while summers offer cool mountain air ideal for trekking and rafting.

Do's and don'ts

Quick guide to local norms.

Do

  • Accept offers of çay — refusing hospitality is considered impolite
  • Greet shopkeepers when entering ('Merhaba')
  • Remove shoes at mosque entrances and when invited into traditional homes
  • Ask permission before photographing locals
  • Learn a few Turkish phrases — locals greatly appreciate the effort
  • Bargain politely at bazaars — it is expected for non-food goods

Don't

  • Do not photograph military installations, government buildings, or dams
  • Do not enter mosques during prayer times
  • Do not publicly display alcohol — Gümüşhane is conservative; drink only in licensed restaurants
  • Do not show affection publicly beyond hand-holding between heterosexual couples
  • Do not refuse food offered by hosts without a polite explanation
  • Do not criticise Atatürk or the Turkish flag — this is a criminal offence in Turkey
