Hakkâri is a remote, breathtakingly scenic province in southeastern Turkey, bordering Iraq and Iran. Rising to altitudes above 4,000 metres in the Cilo-Sat mountain range, it offers pristine alpine lakes, dramatic river gorges, ancient fortresses, and a rich Kurdish cultural heritage largely untouched by mass tourism.
Hakkâri cuisine is rooted in the Kurdish and southeastern Turkish tradition of hearty mountain cooking. Lamb is the centrepiece, prepared as tandoor-baked whole, slow-cooked kavurma, or grilled şiş. Fresh mountain trout is a local treasure. Bread-baking is an art — gözleme, lavash, and tannur bread are made fresh daily in many households and local bakeries. Dairy is prominent: Van herb cheese (otlu peynir), butter, yoghurt, and clotted cream accompany most breakfasts.
