Iğdır is a small province in far-eastern Turkey, cradled in the broad Ararat Plain at Turkey's lowest elevation east of the Euphrates. Doğubeyazıt & İshak Paşa Palace
İshak Paşa Palace is a fortified palace complex begun in the late 1600s and finished under Ishak Pasha in the 18th century, mixing Ottoman, Seljuk, Persian and Armenian architectural elements in one hilltop compound above the town of Doğubeyazıt. It sits on a ridge with Mount Ararat filling the view to the north, and the palace's stone carving, harem quarters and mosque make it one of the most complete Ottoman-era palace complexes outside Istanbul. A visit is really a half-day: the palace itself, the ruined Ottoman-era fortress above it, and the town below with its view of Ararat.

Tuzluca Salt Caves & Sürmeli Caravanserai
Tuzluca, east of Iğdır, sits on a large rock-salt deposit, and its salt cave is used both as a working mine and as a respiratory-therapy site where people with asthma and related conditions stay in the cave's stable, salt-saturated air for extended periods. For a day visitor the interest is different: walking into the mined chambers to see the salt walls and formations, and the town of Tuzluca itself, which grew up around the salt trade on the historic route running along the Aras valley. The caravanserai element reflects that this stretch of the valley was a stopping point on regional trade routes between the South Caucasus and Anatolia.

Aralık Bird Sanctuary & Pomegranate Orchards
Aralık district, south of Iğdır toward the Aras River and the Armenian and Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan) borders, sits in the lowest and warmest part of the Iğdır plain, which is why it has become one of Turkey's main pomegranate-growing areas - the microclimate here is noticeably warmer than the rest of the province, let alone the rest of the Eastern Anatolia region. The Aras River wetlands running through the district also draw migratory birds using the river corridor as a flyway between the Caucasus and points south. It's a rural, agricultural day out rather than a sightseeing circuit: driving through orchard country and stopping at the riverside wetlands.
