Kahramanmaraş is a city of roughly 550,000 people in southeastern Turkey, perched between the Taurus Mountains and the upper Euphrates plain. Famous throughout Turkey and the world for its uniquely stretchy dondurma (ice cream) and fiery Maraş pepper, the city pairs a proud culinary identity with a rich layered history — Hittite, Roman, Byzantine, Dulkadirli, and Ottoman — visible in its hilltop castle and archaeology museum. The city was at the epicentre of the devastating February 2023 earthquakes and has undergone significant reconstruction; visitors today witness both historic resilience and ambitious rebuilding alongside remaining ancient monuments.

Kahramanmaraş sits at around 570 metres above sea level in a valley between the Taurus Mountains and the upper plains of southeastern Anatolia. The climate is transitional — hot semi-continental summers (36–38°C peak July–August) and moderately cold winters (occasionally snowy, 2–8°C January). Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the ideal visiting windows, offering warm days (18–26°C), low humidity, and comfortable conditions for walking the castle and bazaar areas. The nearby Ahır Mountain plateau (1,500–2,234 m) is 10–12°C cooler than the city in summer and can be snow-covered November–April.
