Kilis is a small historic city in southeastern Turkey, situated just kilometres from the Syrian border and nestled among ancient olive groves. Long an important junction between Anatolia and the Levant, Kilis retains a distinctive Arab-influenced culture expressed in its unique cuisine, centuries-old bazaars, Ottoman mosques, and the olive oil traditions that have shaped life here for millennia. Kilis is a very conservative, predominantly Muslim city with almost no conventional nightlife in the Western sense. Alcohol is not widely available and no bars, clubs, or live music venues operate in the city centre. The evening social scene centres on the tea gardens along Atatürk Caddesi, the family promenade at Cumhuriyet Meydanı, and late-night soup restaurants. After dinner, the most enjoyable evening activity is joining locals on the evening walk (akşam yürüyüşü) that fills the main square from 19:00–22:00.
