Hacıbektaş Veli Pilgrimage Town
Hacıbektaş is the small Nevşehir Province town built around the tekke (dervish lodge) of Hacı Bektaş Veli, the 13th-century founder of the Bektashi order. The complex, now the Hacıbektaş Veli Museum, is the most important pilgrimage site for Turkey's Alevi-Bektaşi community, and the town itself is otherwise a quiet agricultural center that only fills up around the annual commemoration in August. Kaman-Kalehöyük is a tell (settlement mound) near the town of Kaman that has been excavated continuously since 1986 by the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology under Sachihiro Omura, revealing an unbroken sequence of occupation from the Bronze Age through Ottoman times. What makes it worth the detour is less the low, grass-covered mound itself and more the purpose-built Kaman-Kalehöyük Archaeology Museum next to it, which displays finds from the dig in well-organized period order. It's a site for people interested in the mechanics of a long-running excavation, not a dramatic ruin.
