- Dress modestly when visiting mosques and the Hacıbektaş Complex (cover shoulders and legs; scarves available at mosque entrances)
- Accept tea when offered — refusing can be seen as impolite; it's always free
- Photograph local people only after asking for permission (mime a camera gesture and smile)
- Greet shopkeepers and locals with 'Merhaba' (hello) — it's appreciated
- Carry small denomination TRY banknotes for dolmuş and market purchases
Don't
- Do not enter a mosque during prayer times (five times daily) unless invited; wait outside until prayers finish
- Do not photograph military installations or official buildings
- Do not discount or mock the significance of rock-cut churches — for many Cappadocians, these are sacred ancestral heritage sites
- Do not leave excessive rubbish in the valleys — trails through fairy chimneys are ecologically sensitive
