Van is a historic city in eastern Turkey set on the southeastern shore of Lake Van — the largest lake in Turkey and one of the world's largest soda lakes at 3,713 km². The city sits at 1,750 metres above sea level, surrounded by dramatic volcanic mountains. Van is famous for its extraordinary breakfast tradition (Van kahvaltısı), its legendary white Van cats with heterochromia, and the nearby Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island. The ancient Urartian fortress of Van Castle looms over the old city ruins, recalling a civilisation that flourished here from the 9th to 7th centuries BC. Van Cat House
Children love the famous Van cats at Yüzüncü Yıl University's Van Kedi Evi. The all-white cats with blue and amber eyes (heterochromia) are a hit with all ages. Free on weekdays.
Lake Van Swimming at Edremit
The calm, alkaline waters of Lake Van are safe for swimming children (the water is buoyant and non-toxic). Edremit Beach (20 km from Van) has gentle entry and supervised area in peak season.
Akdamar Island Boat Trip
The short boat ride from Gevaş to Akdamar Island is an adventure for children. The bas-relief carvings of biblical scenes on the church walls are engaging for older children. Boats are stable and family-friendly.
Van Castle Rock Exploration
Van Castle's 1.5-km basalt rock offers a fascinating walk for children who enjoy scrambling on ancient stonework. Cuneiform inscriptions carved into the rock face inspire young imaginations.
Van Museum Interactive Exhibits
Van Museum's Urartian collection includes bronze horse harnesses, golden jewellery, and warrior helmets that appeal to children interested in ancient history. Request the children's guide pamphlet at the entrance.
Muradiye Waterfall Walk
The 20-metre cascade at Muradiye is spectacular for children. The short walk from the car park to the falls is easy (flat, 10 minutes). A cafe at the base sells tea and snacks.
Flamingo Watching at North Lake Shore
Pink flamingos gather in large numbers on the northern Lake Van shore, visible from the road near the airport. Binoculars make this much more exciting for children.

The Van breakfast experience is surprisingly child-friendly: the enormous spread of cheeses, honey, eggs, and jams means children find something they like, and the relaxed long-table format suits families well.
