Ukraine is a diverse Eastern European nation rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. From the golden-domed churches of Kyiv to the charming cobblestone streets of Lviv, Ukraine offers travelers architectural marvels, vibrant cultural traditions, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality.
Ukraine is currently experiencing an active armed conflict following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Western regions including Lviv and the Carpathians have significantly lower risk than eastern and southern Ukraine near the front lines. Most Western governments advise against all travel to Ukraine, though some travelers and aid workers continue to visit western regions. Conditions can change rapidly.
Current safety advisory
High
Active armed conflict across Ukraine since February 2022. Eastern regions (Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson) are active combat zones and must be avoided. Kyiv experiences periodic missile and drone attacks requiring shelter. Western Ukraine including Lviv has lower risk but is not immune to long-range attacks. Always register with your embassy and maintain evacuation plan.

Essential safety tips
Practical advice that applies everywhere.
Monitor local news and follow air raid alerts immediately
Identify shelter locations in advance and seek appropriate cover during alerts
Register with your embassy before travel
Maintain comprehensive travel insurance including emergency evacuation coverage
Be aware that men aged 18-60 with Ukrainian citizenship may be subject to exit restrictions and mobilization
Keep digital and physical copies of important documents
Stay informed about current security conditions in your destination area
Download the Alarm app (air raid alert app) before traveling and keep phone charged at all times
Avoid areas near the eastern and southern frontlines; check government travel advisories daily as conditions change rapidly
Carry cash in Ukrainian hryvnia as ATMs and card payments may be unavailable in some areas; have emergency funds accessible
Common scams to avoid
Recognise and sidestep tourist-targeted scams.
Taxi overcharging
Unlicensed taxis at airports and train stations may charge 5-10x normal rates from unsuspecting tourists unfamiliar with local prices.
How to avoid: Use Bolt or Uklon apps exclusively for taxis; never negotiate with drivers at stands; typical Boryspil Airport to Kyiv center is $10-20 via app
Currency exchange fraud
Unofficial money changers on streets may offer attractive rates but use sleight of hand to shortchange customers or provide counterfeit bills.
How to avoid: Use only official bank exchange offices or ATMs; never change money on the street
Fake charity collectors
Individuals posing as charity collectors for war relief or orphanages approach tourists in tourist areas, particularly in Lviv's Old Town.
How to avoid: Donate only to verified organizations; politely decline street collectors; genuine charities have official documentation
Bar tab manipulation
Some bars, particularly near tourist areas, may present inflated bills or add items not ordered, especially when serving groups late at night.
How to avoid: Always ask for itemized bill (rakhunok); check prices before ordering; photograph menu prices if suspicious
Health considerations
Staying healthy on your trip.

- Routine vaccinations (MMR, DTP, etc.), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid (if visiting rural areas), Rabies (if extensive outdoor activities), COVID-19
- Water
- Safety
- Not recommended for drinking in most areas
- Notes
- Bottled water widely available and inexpensive ($0.30-0.50 per liter), locals often drink boiled tap water, water quality varies by city with Lviv generally better than Kyiv
- Food
- Notes
- Food poisoning from street food (use caution), tick-borne encephalitis in forest areas (vaccine available), cold/flu in winter months, air quality issues in industrial cities
- Facilities
- Widely available in cities, many open 24 hours
Safety for specific travellers
Tailored advice for different groups.
Solo travellers
Western Ukraine including Lviv and Carpathians is generally safe for solo travelers outside the context of the ongoing conflict — crime rates are low by European standards. Solo travelers should download the Alarm app, register with their embassy, know the location of the nearest air raid shelter, and maintain flexible plans. The Ukrainian community is extremely welcoming to supportive foreign visitors.
Female travellers
Ukraine is relatively safe for female solo travelers with normal precautions — street harassment is less common than in many countries. Main concerns are the same as for all travelers: conflict-related safety. Avoid poorly lit areas near train stations late at night, use ride apps rather than street taxis, and trust instincts in unfamiliar situations. Lviv's Old Town and central Kyiv are safe to walk during daylight hours.
Families
Families should carefully consider travel to Ukraine given the ongoing conflict and mandatory air raid shelter requirements including for children. Western Ukraine (Lviv, Carpathians) has lower risk but no guarantee of safety. If traveling with children, thoroughly practice shelter procedures, keep documents easily accessible, and have a clear evacuation plan. Outside the conflict context, Ukrainians adore children and family infrastructure is good in major cities.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Same-sex relationships are legal in Ukraine but not widely accepted in society, particularly outside major cities. Public displays of affection between same-sex couples may attract negative attention. Kyiv had a growing LGBTQ+ scene before 2022 with annual Pride marches; wartime has complicated this. Lviv is more conservative. Discrimination is uncommon but LGBTQ+ travelers should exercise discretion outside established venues.
