Abu Dhabi Adventure Activities Guide 2026

From half-day thrills to multi-day expeditions — how to plan adventure travel in Abu Dhabi.

The short answer: start with Dune Bashing and Desert Safari, Sandboarding and Skydiving — Skydive Abu Dhabi. This guide profiles 10+ adventure activities in Abu Dhabi, with prices, timing, and the practical notes that decide whether each one earns a place in your plan.

Abu Dhabi is the capital emirate of the United Arab Emirates, blending ultramodern architecture with rich Bedouin heritage. Home to iconic landmarks like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, it offers world-class culture, luxury hospitality, and thrilling desert adventures.

Top adventure experiences

The most exciting activities Abu Dhabi has to offer.

  1. 1

    Dune Bashing and Desert Safari

Easy to Moderate (as a passenger)

The iconic Gulf adventure — a 4WD SUV driven at high speed over the crests and flanks of desert dunes, creating a rollercoaster ride through the sand. Abu Dhabi's dunes in the Al Khatim area (40km from the city) are used for standard evening safari packages. The Liwa Oasis dunes (240km south) offer a far more extreme and impressive experience — the Liwa dunes are among the largest in the world and dune bashing here is a genuine adrenaline experience. Most packages include sandboarding, camel riding, and a Bedouin camp dinner.

  2. 2

    Sandboarding

    Easy to Moderate

Sandboarding on Abu Dhabi's desert dunes — strapping to a board and descending the steep face of a sand dune at speed. Both standing (like snowboarding) and prone (body boarding on the sand) positions are common. Sandboarding is typically included in desert safari packages but dedicated sandboarding excursions focus more exclusively on the sport. Liwa's massive dunes offer the most dramatic sandboarding descents.

  3. 3

    Skydiving — Skydive Abu Dhabi

    No experience needed (tandem)

Tandem skydiving over Abu Dhabi — free-falling from 13,000 feet (4,000m) at 200km/h for 60 seconds before the parachute opens for a 5-minute canopy flight back to earth. The views during canopy descent include the Arabian Gulf, the city skyline, the Corniche, and the surrounding desert. Skydive Abu Dhabi is one of the UAE's premier skydiving operations.

  4. 4

Kite Surfing — Abu Dhabi Coast

    Beginner to Advanced

Abu Dhabi's coastal waters offer good kite surfing conditions during the winter months when consistent north-easterly winds (Shamal) blow across the Gulf. The Corniche beach area and Yas Island have designated kite surfing zones with IKO-certified schools. The warm, clear water and consistent winds make this an excellent learning location.

  5. 5

White Water Rafting and Kayaking — Wadi Adventure

    Easy to Extreme (Grade 2–6)

The Middle East's only white water rafting facility — an artificial river channel at the base of Jebel Hafeet mountain with multiple channels ranging from Grade 2 (family-friendly) to Grade 6 (expert only). Purpose-built to international competition standard, Wadi Adventure has hosted regional championships. Other activities at the same facility include kayaking, surfing on a stationary wave, and a via ferrata rock climbing route on the adjacent Jebel Hafeet limestone face.

  6. 6

    Camel Trekking

    Easy

Camel trekking through the Abu Dhabi desert is one of the most authentic connections to Bedouin heritage available to visitors. Guided camel treks range from a 30-minute sunrise experience at a desert camp to multi-hour expeditions through the Liwa Oasis dunes. Camels are gentle and well-trained for tourism. The perspective from a camel's back — about 2.5 metres above the ground — gives a unique view of the desert landscape.

  7. 7

Hot Air Balloon — Liwa Desert

    No experience needed

A dawn hot air balloon flight over the Liwa dunes is one of the most spectacular experiences available in the UAE — ascending silently above the massive dunes of the Empty Quarter as the first light turns them gold, with views extending for hundreds of kilometres over the world's largest uninterrupted sand desert. Champagne breakfast on landing is standard.

  8. 8

    Scuba Diving — Arabian Gulf

    Beginner to Advanced

The Arabian Gulf around Abu Dhabi offers interesting diving — not the coral reef variety of the Red Sea, but rocky reefs, artificial reefs, and some shipwrecks with diverse Gulf marine life including hawksbill sea turtles, eagle rays, large schools of fish (yellowfin tuna, barracuda, grouper), octopus, and moray eels. PADI dive centres operate from Abu Dhabi and nearby Musandam (Oman) — the latter offering the Gulf's finest diving.

  9. 9

Indoor Skiing — Ski Abu Dhabi

    Beginner to Intermediate

Ski Abu Dhabi is an indoor ski facility at Yas Mall — a surreal but fun experience of snow sport in the desert. The facility has a 400m beginner run, a steeper black run section, tubing, snowboarding, and a snow play area. While not comparable to European ski resorts, it offers a unique experience and is particularly popular with UAE residents who have never seen snow.

  10. 10

    Stand-Up Paddleboarding in the Mangroves

    Easy to Moderate

Stand-up paddleboarding through the channels of Abu Dhabi's Eastern Mangroves is a peaceful and remarkable experience — paddling under the mangrove canopy, watching herons and egrets fish, and navigating the tidal channels with the Abu Dhabi skyline rising above the trees. SUP hire and guided tours are available from operators at the Eastern Mangroves Promenade.
