The Witchery by the Castle

The Witchery by the Castle occupies a 16th-century merchant's house at the foot of Edinburgh Castle on Castlehill, the uppermost stretch of the Royal Mile. Opened by James Thomson in 1979, the restaurant has become one of Edinburgh's most theatrical dining experiences, celebrated for its sumptuously decorated rooms and confidently Scottish menu. There are two dining spaces: the original Witchery dining room, panelled in dark Scottish oak with antique tapestries, heraldic decoration, and candlelight that transforms even a Tuesday evening into an occasion; and the Secret Garden, a covered courtyard with a different but equally lavish character. The menu focuses on classic Scottish preparations executed with quality produce: Aberdeen Angus fillet, West Coast lobster, whole roasted sea bass, Highland game in season, and a celebrated oyster selection. Desserts lean towards traditional Scottish comfort — sticky toffee pudding and cranachan feature consistently. The wine list is substantial, running to several hundred bins across Old and New World producers. Ludicrously atmospheric suites above the restaurant are available for overnight stays, making The Witchery one of Edinburgh's most extravagant hotels. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily and does not require Michelin status to justify its popularity — location, setting, and reliable cooking sustain it across generations of visitors.
