Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota features the colossal carved likenesses of four United States presidents — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln — sculpted into the granite face of Mount Rushmore between 1927 and 1941 under the direction of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Each face measures approximately 60 feet in height, and the carvings represent the nation's founding, expansion, preservation, and unification respectively. The memorial site is administered by the National Park Service and receives roughly three million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited sites in the American West. The primary viewing experience begins at the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, which houses exhibits on the sculpture's construction methods, the work of the 400 workers who shaped the granite, and the lives of the four presidents. A half-mile Presidential Trail loops below the main viewing terrace and provides multiple elevations for viewing the faces — the closest ground-level views are from this trail, which winds through ponderosa pine forest below the carved cliff face. The Sculptor's Studio, a 1939 structure on the grounds, displays Borglum's tools, plaster models, and original scale maquettes. The highlight for many visitors is the evening lighting ceremony, held from late May through mid-September: a park ranger program precedes the illumination of the faces at dusk, followed by a color guard ceremony retiring the flag. This ceremony is one of the most atmospheric experiences at any national monument. The nearby Crazy Horse Memorial, about 17 miles away, is a privately funded sculpture still in progress since 1948 and provides meaningful additional context on the region's Indigenous history.
