Niagara Falls consists of three waterfalls straddling the United States-Canada border between Niagara Falls, New York, and Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side is the largest of the three, carrying approximately 90 percent of the combined flow over a 170-foot drop and a curved crest 2,600 feet wide — it is one of the highest-flow waterfalls on Earth by volume. The American Falls and smaller Bridal Veil Falls are on the US side.

Three powerful waterfalls straddling the US-Canada border create one of North America's most spectacular natural sights. Boat tours get you close to the thundering cascades.

Together they produce a perpetual roar audible for miles and a mist column visible from 25 miles away on clear days. From the US side, Niagara Falls State Park — the oldest state park in the United States, established in 1885 — provides the primary visitor infrastructure including overlooks, a visitor center, and the Maid of the Mist boat tour boarding area. The Maid of the Mist takes visitors into the basin directly below the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, offering the closest possible view of the full cataract. All passengers receive blue plastic ponchos against the heavy mist; cameras and phones require waterproofing. The Cave of the Winds experience on Goat Island descends to platforms at the base of Bridal Veil Falls, putting visitors within feet of the falling water. From the Canadian side, Table Rock provides an unobstructed view looking directly into the Horseshoe Falls from above — many consider it the finest single vantage point. Niagara Falls is dramatically illuminated each night by colored lights after sunset, and fireworks are staged on summer weekend evenings from the Canadian side. A passport is required to cross the border and access Canadian-side attractions.

When to visit

June through August offers the highest water flow, full summer vegetation, and the complete illumination and fireworks program. Spring (April–May) sees excellent flow as snowmelt peaks, with far lighter crowds. Winter is dramatic with heavy ice formations, but boat tours do not operate.

Accessibility

Niagara Falls State Park has paved accessible paths from the parking areas to main overlooks. The Maid of the Mist accommodates wheelchairs on the lower passenger deck. The Cave of the Winds involves outdoor wooden staircases not suitable for wheelchairs. The Canadian side's Table Rock Centre is fully accessible with elevator access to the falls-edge plaza.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a passport to see Niagara Falls from both sides?

Yes. Crossing the Rainbow Bridge between the US and Canadian sides requires a valid passport for US and non-Canadian citizens. Canadian citizens need valid Canadian ID. The Canadian side is widely considered to offer the most dramatic views.

Which side of Niagara Falls is better to visit?

The Canadian side offers the most panoramic views of the Horseshoe Falls directly at Table Rock. The US side has Niagara Falls State Park, the Cave of the Winds, and the Maid of the Mist boarding area. A full visit to both sides is ideal if time and passports allow.

How long does a visit to Niagara Falls take?

The main viewpoints and Maid of the Mist take a half-day from one side. A full day allows the Cave of the Winds, both shores, and evening illumination. Staying overnight enables the fireworks and illuminated falls after the daytime crowds depart.

When is the Maid of the Mist in operation?

The Maid of the Mist typically operates from mid-April through late October, weather and ice conditions permitting. Tickets can be purchased on-site at the boarding area in Niagara Falls, New York, or through the Maid of the Mist website.
