Kansas is the geographic heart of the United States, a state of sweeping tallgrass prairies, iconic Wild West history, world-class aerospace heritage, and dramatic chalk formations rising from the High Plains. From the rolling Flint Hills to the sunflower fields of harvest season, Kansas rewards travelers who venture beyond the interstate.
Kansas has a humid continental climate in the east transitioning to semi-arid on the western High Plains. The state experiences four distinct seasons with dramatic swings. Winters bring cold Arctic air masses with temperatures dropping below 0°F; summers are hot and humid with Wichita averaging 95°F in July. Kansas is in the heart of Tornado Alley — severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are most likely April through June. The Flint Hills and eastern Kansas receive about 35–40 inches of rain annually, while western Kansas may get only 15 inches. Kansas has significant sunshine year-round despite its weather extremes.
