It's Minnesota's oldest state park and a genuine destination day given the distance from the Twin Cities - the headwaters walk itself takes only minutes, so the rest of the day is built around the park's old-growth pine forest and Wilderness Drive loop. This is a long day trip; some visitors turn it into an overnight instead.

The two halves of a Rochester day don't overlap much - one is an urban walk through the Mayo campus, the other a nature-center stop with trails and a small visitor building. Together they make a reasonable day without requiring a long drive.

Given the 3.5-hour drive from the Twin Cities, this works best as a day trip built around those two centers rather than an attempt to experience the wilderness proper, which requires an outfitter and more time.

Faribault, the nearby town, adds an unrelated stop built around cheese: it's home to Faribault Dairy's aged blue cheese, made in sandstone caves that date to the 1930s. The two combine into an easy half-day-plus trip well within reach of the Twin Cities.

It's a compact, walkable day: most of what there is to see sits within a few blocks of downtown, plus the brewery and monument just outside it. The town is at its most active during its scheduled festivals, but works as a standard day trip year-round.
