Ninh Binh (Tam Coc and Trang An)
Ninh Binh is a limestone karst region often called the inland version of Ha Long Bay, with rivers cutting through vertical rock towers, rice paddies and cave tunnels. The main way to see it is a slow rowing-boat ride through Tam Coc or Trang An, passing through several low limestone caves where the boatman ducks under the rock. It works well as a day trip from Hanoi because the boat rides, plus a stop at the Hoa Lu ancient citadel or Mua Cave viewpoint, fill a day without an overnight stay.

Ha Long Bay Day Cruise
Ha Long Bay is the UNESCO-listed seascape of thousands of limestone islets rising out of the Gulf of Tonkin, and a day cruise gets a traveller onto the water among them without committing to an overnight boat. Because the bay itself is roughly a three to four hour drive from Hanoi each way, a day trip means most of the actual time on the water is compressed into a few hours around midday, typically including a stop at one karst cave and a chance to kayak or swim near a limestone cluster.

Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City
The Mekong Delta is Vietnam's low-lying river region south of Ho Chi Minh City, a patchwork of rice paddies, fruit orchards and canals where a lot of daily life still happens on the water. A day trip typically covers one or two river towns - My Tho and Ben Tre are the closest, Can Tho with its floating market is further and usually needs an overnight stay to see properly - with a boat ride along the smaller canals and a stop at a workshop or orchard along the way.

My Son Sanctuary from Hoi An
My Son is a cluster of red-brick Hindu temple ruins built by the Cham kingdom between roughly the 4th and 13th centuries, set in a valley surrounded by hills a short drive from Hoi An. Many of the original towers were damaged by American bombing during the war, so the site today is a mix of partially standing brick towers, foundations, and a small number of well-preserved structures, rather than a single grand complex - worth the trip for the setting and the carved brickwork rather than for scale.

Perfume Pagoda from Hanoi
The Perfume Pagoda (Chua Huong) is a complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the limestone hills southwest of Hanoi, reached by a boat ride along the Yen Stream followed by a climb - or cable car - up to Huong Tich Cave, the main pagoda built inside a large cavern. The trip is as much about the slow river approach through karst scenery as the pagoda itself, and it becomes extremely crowded during the spring festival season, quieter and more manageable outside it.
