A long loop across a range of granite hills rising from flat farmland, climbing to Flinders Peak for 360-degree views over Port Phillip Bay and the You Yangs woodland.
The You Yangs Great Circle Walk starts from the Fazio Drive entrance to You Yangs Regional Park near Little River, about 55 minutes south-west of Melbourne's CBD via the Princes Freeway. Free car parking is available near the Big Rock picnic area and the park's visitor information area; there is no public transport directly to the park, so a car is necessary. No permit is required.
The full Great Circle Walk covers approximately 18.5 kilometres around the granite range, typically taking 5-6 hours, with around 500 metres of cumulative elevation gain spread across the whole loop. Walkers who only want the summit can instead take the Flinders Peak Walk, a 3.5 kilometre return option taking 1.5-2 hours. The full circuit is graded moderate: there is sustained walking distance and some undulating climbs, but the formed trail has no technical scrambling or exposure comparable to a true alpine route.
The track surface is mostly firm dirt and gravel fire trail with some rockier sections near Flinders Peak, running through open grey box and eucalypt woodland with limited shade for long stretches, especially on the exposed granite outcrops. Conditions can get very hot in summer with little tree cover on the higher sections.
Flinders Peak, the highest point in the park at 352 metres, is the main landmark and offers 360-degree views over Port Phillip Bay, the You Yangs woodland, and on clear days the Melbourne skyline; it is a natural turn-around point for walkers not attempting the full circuit. Big Rock, a large granite tor near the start, is another notable feature along the route.
There is no water source on the trail itself; the Big Rock picnic area near the trailhead has toilets and picnic facilities but no kiosk, so walkers should carry ample water, particularly for the full-length circuit in warm weather.
