Austria captivates visitors with its imperial cities, Alpine landscapes, and rich musical heritage. From Vienna's grand palaces to Salzburg's baroque architecture and the stunning Tyrolean Alps, this Central European gem offers world-class culture, outdoor adventures, and legendary coffeehouse traditions.
Austria has a temperate continental climate with distinct seasons shaped significantly by Alpine geography. Vienna and the eastern lowlands experience warm summers (25-30°C), cold winters (often below freezing), and moderate spring and autumn. The Alpine regions in Tyrol, Salzburg, and Carinthia have shorter summers, heavier snowfall, and temperatures running 5-10°C cooler than the cities. Annual rainfall is moderate (600-800mm in Vienna, higher in Alps) with afternoon thunderstorms common in summer above 1,500m.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: March-May
Spring arrives gradually with April being particularly beautiful as Vienna's parks bloom and Wachau Valley fills with apricot blossoms. Temperatures climb from 8-12°C in March to 18-20°C in May. Alpine snow still covers higher elevations, making this ideal for both city breaks and early mountain hikes.
Summer
Months: June-August
Austria's warmest months with Vienna temperatures of 25-30°C and Alpine areas 15-22°C at altitude. Peak tourist season for both city sightseeing and Alpine hiking. The Salzburg Festival (late July to late August) draws international visitors. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in Alpine areas from 2 PM onward.
Fall
Months: September-November
Autumn is arguably Austria's finest season — golden light on vineyard harvests in Wachau and Burgenland, dramatic foliage in Alpine valleys, and comfortable temperatures (15-20°C in September, dropping to 8-12°C in November). Crowds thin significantly after September, and cultural programming in Vienna reaches its peak.
Winter
Months: December-February
Vienna winters are cold and often grey (2-5°C, with snow 15-20 days/year), but the city transforms with spectacular Christmas markets, ball season, and a festive atmosphere. Alpine regions transform into world-class ski destinations with reliable snow from December through March at altitude. The Julian Alps and Vorarlberg can receive 300+ cm of snow.
