Best photo spots
Iconic and lesser-known locations worth shooting.
Highland Park (Şəhidlər Xiyabanı)
The hilltop park above the Old City provides the classic Baku skyline shot with Flame Towers in the center, the historic Old City below, and the Caspian stretching to the horizon. The LED tower light show at blue hour creates the most dramatic images.
Best time: Blue hour (30 min after sunset)
Heydar Aliyev Center
Zaha Hadid's extraordinary flowing white curves create endless compositional possibilities. Walk the full perimeter to find different angles — the entry ramp, the curved canopy from below, and wide shots from across the plaza all produce portfolio-worthy images.
Best time: Late afternoon golden hour
Old City Narrow Lanes
The labyrinthine alleys of Icheri Sheher with their worn cobblestones, ancient stone walls, hanging laundry, and occasional glimpses of the Caspian at lane ends are classic street photography territory. Almost entirely empty before 9AM.
Best time: Early morning (8-10AM)
Sheki Khan's Palace Interior
The extraordinary shebeke stained-glass windows create rainbow light patterns when midday sun shines directly through. Close-up details of individual geometric panels and wide shots of entire decorated walls are both stunning.
Best time: 11AM-1PM (midday sun through windows)
Gobustan Petroglyphs at Sunrise
The ancient rock carvings reveal maximum detail under low-angle morning light that creates shadows within the carved lines. Wide shots showing the alien semi-desert landscape with carved boulders scattered to the horizon at golden hour.
Best time: Sunrise (30 min after first light)
Bibi-Heybat Mosque at Sunset
The turquoise and gold domes of the Bibi-Heybat Mosque with the Caspian Sea behind create stunning compositions when the setting sun lights the domes from the west. Reflections of the mosque in the water features at the complex add to the drama.
Best time: Sunset
Mud Volcanoes Landscape
The gray moonscape of the Gobustan mud volcanoes is one of the most otherworldly landscapes in the world. Overcast skies with dramatic clouds enhance the alien atmosphere. Long exposures at sunset extend the tonalities in the gray mud.
Best time: Overcast or dramatic stormy sky

Photography tips
Make your shots stand out.
A polarizing filter dramatically improves Caspian Sea shots by cutting the glare and revealing the deep blue color underneath
Do NOT photograph military installations, government buildings, police, or border checkpoints — this is illegal and can result in detention and confiscation of camera
Ask permission before photographing local people, especially older women and anyone in or near a mosque
The Flame Towers LED display begins 30 minutes after sunset — the show runs for approximately 90 minutes and includes Azerbaijan flag, flames, and seasonal themes
Baku's old 'oil baron' mansions along Istiqlal Ave and around the Old City walls offer exceptional architectural photography often overlooked by tourists
