Top adventure experiences

The most exciting activities Belgium has to offer.

  1. 1

    Kayaking on the Lesse River

    Easy to moderate

One of Belgium's most popular outdoor adventures — a 21km kayak descent of the Lesse river from Houyet to Anseremme (near Dinant), passing through dramatic limestone cliffs, weeping willows, and the rocky gorge of the Ardennes. The Lesse is a Class I–II river ideal for beginners and families. The journey takes 3–5 hours depending on water level and stops.

  2. 2

Kayaking and Canoeing on the Ourthe River

    Moderate (occasional Class II rapids)

The Ourthe river valley offers arguably the most scenic kayaking in Belgium, with tighter gorges, more varied rapids, and fewer crowds than the Lesse. The classic route runs from La Roche-en-Ardenne through wooded gorges with frequent Class I–II rapids. La Roche itself is a magnificent fortified town in a tight river bend.

  3. 3

Rock Climbing at Freyr (Rocher de Freyr)

    All levels (grade 3–8c)

Belgium's premier rock climbing destination, a 2km stretch of limestone cliffs rising 50–80m above the Meuse river. Freyr has over 800 routes from grade 3 to 8c, making it suitable for beginners through elite climbers. The Château de Freyr at the cliff base adds a dramatic backdrop. The compact, hard Meuse limestone is ideal for sport climbing.

  4. 4

Caving at Han-sur-Lesse (Grottes de Han)

Easy (standard tour); moderate (speleology adventure tour)

Belgium's most spectacular cave system, carved by the Lesse river through limestone over millennia. The standard guided tour follows 3km of underground passages through vast chambers (the Grande Salle is 150m wide and 60m high), past stalactite formations, underground lakes, and the point where the Lesse river flows underground. An adventure 'speleology' tour is available for those wanting to explore off-route with helmet and overalls.

  5. 5

    Mountain Biking in the Ardennes

All levels (dedicated beginner through expert trails)

The Belgian Ardennes offers some of the best mountain biking in Western Europe, with purpose-built trail centers and an extensive network of waymarked routes through forest and river valleys. Houffalize is the MTB capital, hosting professional enduro races and offering trails from beginner to expert black diamond. The terrain is hilly with clay-heavy soils that create technical conditions — fast and loose in dry summer, challenging in wet weather.

  6. 6

    Hiking the Hautes Fagnes Plateau

Moderate (guided tours); challenging (off-trail in wet/winter conditions)

A guided trekking experience across Belgium's highest and most remote landscape — a vast peat bog moorland of heather, cotton grass, and black water pools near the German border. The plateau has a haunting, otherworldly atmosphere and is a Special Area of Conservation. Much of the plateau is only accessible with an authorized guide due to the ecological sensitivity of the terrain and safety risks.

  7. 7

Cycling the Route Verte (Green Route) — Brussels to Paris

Moderate to challenging (significant hills in Ardennes sections)

A long-distance cycling route from Brussels through the Ardennes and into France, following the Route Verte cycling network. Belgium has an exceptionally developed cycling infrastructure with dedicated paths, waymarked routes, and cyclist-friendly accommodation. The Wallonia section passes through Namur, the Meuse valley, and the Ardennes. For shorter rides, the numbered node (knooppunten) cycling network covers all of Belgium.
