Getting Around Congo 2026

Getting around Congo: transport options, costs, and practical tips.

The Republic of Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, offers a unique blend of rainforest adventures, wildlife encounters, and vibrant urban culture. From the bustling capital of Brazzaville to the coastal charm of Pointe-Noire, visitors can explore pristine national parks, encounter western lowland gorillas, and experience authentic Central African hospitality.

Public
Informal minibus network covers urban areas but is crowded, slow, and confusing for visitors. Not recommended as primary transport option.
Taxi
Negotiated private taxis are the practical standard for tourists. No ride-hailing apps. Always agree on price before departure.
Rental
Car hire available at airports and major hotels. 4WD recommended for anywhere outside cities. Good for day trips and intercity travel.
Walking
City centers of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire are walkable during daylight. The Corniche in Brazzaville and beachfront in Pointe-Noire are pleasant on foot. Avoid walking after dark.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Always negotiate taxi fares before getting in — quote a price when entering and agree before departing. Typical city trip: 2,000-5,000 XAF ($3-8).

Tip

Arrange airport transfers through your hotel in advance — airport taxis at curb often attempt significant overcharging of foreign visitors

Tip

The Congo-Ocean Railway from Brazzaville to Pointe-Noire (12-16 hours) is a scenic historic journey but confirm schedules in advance as service is irregular

Tip

For day trips to Loufoulakari Falls or Diosso Gorge, hire a car with driver for $60-100/day through your hotel — more reliable than public bush taxis for tourist destinations

Tip

Domestic flights between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire are the fastest intercity option (1 hour, $150-250) but book in advance as seats sell quickly

Tip

In Pointe-Noire, many beachfront hotels are within walking distance of each other along the coast — carry a map as street signage is inconsistent

Tip

Police checkpoints are common on roads between cities — always carry your passport, visa, and yellow fever certificate as documentation will be checked
