- May-June: snow melts reveal soggy terrain. Lower trails accessible by late May, fells by mid-June. Midnight sun begins late May in Lapland. Wildflowers emerge, bird watching excellent.
- Summer
- July-August: Peak season, all trails accessible, long daylight hours (24h sun in Lapland). Warm, possible thunderstorms. Mosquitoes in Lapland can be severe - repellent essential.
- Fall
- September-October: Best season for colors (ruska). Crowds diminish, cooler temperatures ideal for hiking. Northern Lights season begins. First snow on fells in late September.
- Winter
- November-April: Most trails require snowshoes or skis. Marked winter trails at ski resorts. Polar night in Lapland (December-January). Extreme cold requires proper equipment.
