Best times to shoot
Light, weather, and seasonal considerations.
- Sunrise
- June: 3:00-4:30 AM / December: 9:00-10:00 AM. Summer sunrise is very early - set multiple alarms!
- Midday
- Winter midday light is beautiful and low-angled. Summer midday is harsh but Temppeliaukio church interior best at noon.
- Sunset
- June: 10:30 PM - midnight (endless golden hour) / December: 2:30-3:30 PM. Finnish summer sunsets are extraordinarily long.
- Blue Hour
- 30-60 minutes after sunset. Helsinki harbor and Senate Square spectacular. Winter blue hour is brief (15 min) but magical.
Photography tips
Make your shots stand out.
Finland's midnight sun (June-July in Lapland) gives photographers 24 hours of golden hour light - use it fully
For Northern Lights photography bring a fast wide-angle lens (f/1.8-2.8), tripod, and extra batteries (cold drains them fast)
Autumn ruska (September-October) in Lapland rivals New England for foliage photography - plan well ahead
Finnish winter offers dramatic blue light even at midday - don't dismiss grey winter days for photography
