Western Greece is a diverse region spanning three regional units — Achaea, Aetolia-Acarnania, and Elis — encompassing the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Greece's third-largest city Patras, Europe's longest cable-stayed bridge, and sweeping lagoons teeming with flamingos. The region blends ancient archaeology, Byzantine monasteries, Carnival celebrations, mountain rack railways, and long sandy beaches into one of the country's most rewarding but least-crowded itineraries.
Patras is the main transport hub of Western Greece and one of Greece's principal port cities, with regular ferry services to Italy, Ionian islands, and road/rail connections to Athens. The E65/E55 motorway links Patras to Athens in under 2 hours. KTEL Achaias and KTEL Aitoloakarnanias operate the regional bus network. Hellenic Train runs coastal rail services. Within the region, a rental car is the most practical way to reach beaches, Ancient Olympia, and the Aetolia-Acarnania interior.
