- Dress modestly when entering Byzantine churches and monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; scarves available at church doors)
- Greet locals with 'Kalimera' (morning) or 'Kalispera' (afternoon/evening)
- Accept coffee or food when offered by a Greek host — refusing is considered impolite
- Ask permission before photographing people, especially in villages
- Wait for your turn in kafeneio (coffee house) — ordering at the counter is normal in cities but rude in village kafeneio
- Carry cash to rural areas — cards are not universally accepted
- Toast with 'Yamas!' (To our health!) when sharing drinks
Don't
- Do not photograph military installations — illegal in Greece
- Do not disturb religious services in Byzantine churches or monasteries
- Do not bargain in restaurants or official shops (not local culture here); bazaar-style bargaining is not practised
- Do not discuss the 'Macedonia naming dispute' with locals unless invited to — it is a sensitive political topic
- Do not swim in Prespa Lakes in restricted bird sanctuary zones (marked with signs)
- Do not pick mushrooms in Grevena forests without a permit during regulated season
