Las Coloradas Pink Lakes

Las Coloradas is a salt-production area on the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Yucatán state, Mexico, known for its shallow lagoons that turn a vivid pink. The color comes from microorganisms and brine shrimp that thrive in the highly saline water, and it is strongest in dry, sunny conditions. The village of Las Coloradas lies about 45 minutes from Río Lagartos, roughly two hours from Valladolid and three hours from Tulum. Visitors can view the lakes from a roadside viewing area and a few platforms near the salt works, where large pink pools stand beside white salt mounds and a pale sandy shore. Swimming and entering the water are now prohibited, and the area is managed to protect the salt operation and the ecosystem. Most visits last 30 to 60 minutes, and the lakes are typically combined with a flamingo boat tour in Río Lagartos, the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve and lunch in a nearby fishing village. Morning from 8:00 to 10:00 AM and late afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 PM give softer light and fewer tour groups, whereas the midday sun gives the most intense color but harsh shadows. Bright or white clothing contrasts well in photographs. Drones are used by some visitors, though regulations should be checked and permission may be required. The site has little shade and few facilities, so water, sun protection and cash are advisable. Rainy weather weakens the color, and the pink is more vivid in the dry months.
