Foodhallen

Foodhallen is Amsterdam's leading indoor food market, housed in a beautifully repurposed former tram depot in the Oud-West neighborhood near Bellamyplein. Opened in 2014, the space transformed a cavernous industrial hall with original brick walls, steel roof structures, and tram tracks embedded in the floor into a vibrant food destination hosting more than twenty permanent stalls offering an eclectic range of cuisines. The concept draws from the tradition of covered food markets in Barcelona, London, and Rotterdam: each stall is a specialized, quality-focused operation rather than a generic vendor. Visitors navigate between Vietnamese banh mi, Japanese ramen, Dutch bitterballen, artisan pizza, Mexican tacos, oysters, craft burgers, Korean street food, and artisan ice cream, constructing their own meal from the best of each offer. A central bar serves craft beers, natural wines, and cocktails, which can be carried anywhere within the hall. The atmosphere shifts through the day: calm at lunchtime when local workers fill the long communal tables, increasingly lively from early evening as the after-work crowd arrives, and approaching festival energy on Friday and Saturday nights. Foodhallen also includes a cinema, a design hotel, and retail spaces in the surrounding Hallen complex, turning the tram depot block into a full-day cultural and food destination. The Oud-West location places it within easy reach of Vondelpark and the museum quarter, making it convenient for combining with other Amsterdam sights.
