Qatar Safety Guide 2026

Essential safety information, tips, and emergency contacts for traveling in Qatar.

Qatar is a dynamic Arabian Peninsula nation blending futuristic skyscrapers with traditional souqs and Islamic heritage. From the architectural masterpieces of Doha to the serene inland sea and pristine beaches, Qatar offers world-class museums, luxury resorts, and authentic cultural experiences in one of the world's most rapidly developing destinations.

Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world for travelers with extremely low rates of violent crime and an efficient police force. The main risks are related to traffic accidents, extreme summer heat, and legal issues arising from cultural misunderstandings rather than criminal activity.

Common scams to avoid

Recognise and sidestep tourist-targeted scams.

Scam alert

Unofficial taxi overcharging

Unlicensed drivers at the airport and popular tourist areas may offer rides at inflated prices, sometimes 3-5x the normal fare. They may not use meters.

How to avoid: Use official Karwa taxis (turquoise), Uber, or Careem app. Confirm price before getting in any unmarked vehicle.

Scam alert

Fake goods at souq

Counterfeit designer goods (watches, bags, perfume) are sold in some souq shops at prices that seem cheap but are still overpriced for fakes.

How to avoid: Buy branded goods from official stores in malls. If it seems too cheap to be authentic, it probably isn't.

Scam alert

Currency exchange scams

Some street-level money changers short-change customers or use sleight of hand to give incorrect amounts. Rates at these outlets are often worse than official exchange counters.

How to avoid: Use official bank exchange counters or ATMs. Always count your money before leaving the exchange counter.

Health considerations

Staying healthy on your trip.

Vaccinations
No vaccinations required for most travelers. Routine vaccines (MMR, Hepatitis A/B) recommended. Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from endemic countries. COVID-19 requirements may vary - check current regulations.
Water
Tap water is safe to drink and meets international standards. Desalinated seawater throughout Qatar. Bottled water widely available and inexpensive (2-5 QAR per liter).

Safety for specific travellers

Tailored advice for different groups.

Solo travellers

Qatar is excellent for solo travelers of all genders. Crime against tourists is extremely rare. The Doha Metro, Uber, and hotel areas are all very safe at any hour. Solo travelers should still respect dress codes, avoid photographing restricted areas, and be aware that certain behaviors legal elsewhere (public affection, alcohol outside hotel premises) are restricted.

Female travellers

Qatar is one of the safest destinations for female solo travelers in the region. Women can walk alone at night in most areas without harassment. Use licensed taxis or ride apps rather than accepting lifts from strangers. Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) in public areas. Sexual harassment is relatively rare and taken seriously by police. Women traveling alone should be aware that some traditional establishments may be less welcoming.

Families

Qatar is extremely family-friendly with world-class facilities, safe streets, excellent healthcare, and a culture that is very welcoming of children. All major attractions and malls are designed for families. The main considerations are the extreme summer heat (plan outdoor activities carefully) and ensuring children understand modest dress requirements at traditional sites.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Same-sex relationships are illegal in Qatar under Sharia law and can result in imprisonment or deportation. LGBTQ+ travelers should exercise extreme discretion and avoid any public displays of affection. Qatar received LGBTQ+ visitors during the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a general policy of tolerance for tourists, but the legal situation has not changed. LGBTQ+ travelers should carefully consider risks and travel with awareness of local laws.
