When to hike

Seasonal conditions in Rwanda.

Dry Season 1
June to September — Rwanda's main dry season with clear skies and firm trails. Best for all hiking, especially Volcanoes park treks. Busy season with more hikers on popular trails.
Dry Season 2
December to February — Short dry season offering excellent visibility and good trail conditions. Less crowded than June-September.
Long Rains
March to May — Heavy rainfall makes trails muddy and slippery. Nyungwe trails become very challenging. Some volcano hikes operate but be prepared for wet conditions.
Short Rains
October to November — Lighter rains with some clear days. Trails can be muddy but hiking is still possible. Nyungwe forest is lush and birds are active.
