Embalse de Alarcón (Alarcón Reservoir)

The Embalse de Alarcón is a large reservoir on the Júcar River set among the limestone hills of Cuenca province, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. Impounded in the mid-20th century, the reservoir stretches approximately 50 km in length and is one of the largest artificial lakes on the Iberian Peninsula. The water is calm and ranges in colour from deep blue to blue-green, and the surrounding landscape — eroded rock formations, terraced hillsides, and the medieval walled village of Alarcón perched dramatically on a rocky spur above the water — makes it among the most visually striking reservoir destinations in inland Spain. The natural bathing areas are composed of fine gravel, rock shelves, and occasional sandy banks. There is no wave action, and the water is generally calm throughout summer; conditions are well-suited to swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The nautical centre on the shore of the Alarcón promontory offers kayak and paddleboard hire as well as boat excursions around the peninsula. The historic Parador de Alarcón, a restored medieval castle on the promontory above the water, provides an extraordinary architectural backdrop visible from most bathing areas and is among the most celebrated Parador properties in the country. The reservoir draws a varied clientele: couples and families visiting for swimming and watersports, fly-fishing enthusiasts targeting carp and tench in the reservoir and trout in the Júcar river below the dam, and cultural visitors pairing a swim with a tour of the walled medieval village above. The atmosphere is unhurried and scenic — considerably quieter than coastal destinations at comparable latitudes. Picnic areas are laid out along the shore road near the nautical centre, and a bar-restaurant serves meals through the summer season. The reservoir sits at approximately 755 metres elevation, moderating summer temperatures relative to the lower Castilian plateau. Access by car is straightforward from Madrid (two hours via A-3 and N-310) or Cuenca (one hour via N-310). ALSA buses connect Madrid to Motilla del Palancar on the A-3, from where Alarcón is reachable by taxi.
