Getting Around Sri Lanka 2026

From airport to backstreets: the full transport picture for Sri Lanka, with current fares.

Sri Lanka is a tropical island paradise in South Asia, renowned for its ancient Buddhist ruins, stunning beaches, lush tea plantations, and incredible wildlife. From the iconic rock fortress of Sigiriya to the pristine beaches of the south coast and the misty highlands of Ella, this diverse nation offers unforgettable experiences for every traveler.

Public
Excellent value bus and train network covers the entire island. Sri Lanka's trains are legendary — the Kandy-Ella route through tea plantations is one of the world's great rail journeys. Buses are cheap and frequent but crowded.
Taxi
PickMe (local) and Uber apps work in all cities and provide metered fares, eliminating negotiation. Tuk-tuks are ubiquitous for short journeys. Reliability is high through apps.
Rental
Self-drive not recommended — chaotic traffic, poor road markings, animals on roads, and left-hand driving creates significant risk. Hiring a driver with a car is a far better value option at $40-60/day.
Walking
City centres of Colombo, Kandy, and Galle Fort are partially walkable. Heat and traffic make extended walking challenging in lowland cities. Galle Fort is the most pleasant walking environment.

App

Uber

Available in Colombo and major cities. Fewer drivers than PickMe but familiar interface for international travelers. Slightly higher base fares than PickMe.

App

Sri Lanka Railways eServices

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Book the Kandy to Ella observation class train (1st class) at least 2-3 weeks in advance through eservices.railway.gov.lk — it sells out fast and is the best train journey in Sri Lanka

Tip

Download PickMe before arrival — it's Sri Lanka's dominant ride-hailing app with more drivers than Uber, serving tuk-tuks, cars, and vans

Tip

Tuk-tuks should be negotiated before entering — agree price firmly before sitting down if not using the app

Tip

Intercity express buses from Colombo's Bastian Mawatha terminal to Kandy and Galle are fast, air-conditioned, and comfortable for $3-5

Tip

For the Cultural Triangle, a private car with driver for 3-4 days ($40-60/day) is most efficient — trains don't serve Sigiriya or Yala

Tip

Always carry small denomination rupee notes for bus fares — drivers rarely have change for large notes
