Bayburt is a small, authentic province in northeastern Turkey nestled in the Çoruh River valley, framed by the Eastern Pontic Mountains. Known for its imposing medieval castle, pristine highland plateaus (yaylas), wild river gorges, and some of Turkey's finest honey, Bayburt offers an unhurried window into traditional Anatolian life far from the tourist mainstream.
The territory of Bayburt has been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age, lying along the ancient Silk Road corridor connecting Anatolia with the Caucasus and Iran. Successive powers — Urartians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Armenians, Seljuk Turks, the Ilkhanid Mongols, and finally the Ottoman Empire — all controlled Bayburt at various points. The castle, the city's most iconic monument, was substantially built and expanded during the Byzantine and Seljuk periods (9th–12th centuries AD) and later reinforced under the Ottomans. Marco Polo is believed to have passed through the Bayburt region in 1271 on his journey to China. The city was finally incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1514 following the Battle of Chaldiran.
