When to hike
Seasonal conditions in Turkey.
- Spring
- March-May is ideal — wildflowers carpet Cappadocia valleys and Lycian Coast, temperatures comfortable, rivers full, and crowds minimal. Best time for Kaçkar foothills.
- Summer
- June-August for high altitude Kaçkar Mountains trekking above 2,000m. Coast and Cappadocia hikes become hot — start before 7am and finish by noon. Carry plenty of water.
- Fall
- September-October is perfect — summer crowds gone, golden light, cooler temperatures, harvest season with fresh fruit in villages. Best overall season for most Turkish trails.
- Winter
- December-February: Kaçkar and Taurus under snow (skiing season). Cappadocia valleys walkable but cold. Lycian coast mild but trails can be muddy. İstanbul's Belgrad Forest hikeable year-round.
Local hazards
What to watch out for on the trail.
Hazard: Sun exposure and dehydration — carry minimum 2L water and sun protection; heat in summer can be extreme on exposed coastal trails
Hazard: Dogs — Turkish villages use large kangal shepherd dogs to guard flocks; give wide berth, don't run, pick up a stick if concerned
Hazard: Loose rock on volcanic formations in Cappadocia — stick to marked trails; fairy chimneys can be unstable
Hazard: Ticks in spring and early summer — check after hiking in forested areas; Lyme disease risk exists
Hazard: Sudden weather changes in Kaçkar and Taurus mountains — afternoon thunderstorms common; descend before noon on mountain routes
