Mardin is a breathtaking hilltop city in southeastern Turkey, perched at 1,000–1,300 metres above the Mesopotamian plain. Mardin's nightlife is relaxed and centres on rooftop restaurants and tea gardens rather than clubs or bars. The city is predominantly Muslim and conservative, so late-night entertainment is muted compared to Istanbul or coastal resorts. Evenings are best spent at a rooftop restaurant watching the sun set over Syria and the Mesopotamian plain, sipping raki with mezze.
The old city comes alive on warm evenings, with locals and visitors occupying the tea houses and restaurant terraces. A handful of bars serve alcohol, but options are limited. The most atmospheric evenings involve a long dinner at one of the historic mansion restaurants followed by a walk along Birinci Cadde.
