Rize is a verdant Black Sea city in northeastern Turkey, celebrated as the heartland of Turkish tea production. Terraced tea gardens cascade down steep hillsides to the sea, while the Kaçkar Mountains rise dramatically inland, offering world-class trekking, rafting in the Fırtına Valley, and highland plateaus dotted with traditional Hemşin architecture.
Rize has no rail service. The primary long-distance connection is intercity bus to the otogar (bus station) on the eastern edge of the city. Rize-Artvin Airport (RZV) opened in 2021 and serves Turkish domestic routes; Trabzon Airport (TZX) 75 km west has more frequent connections. Within the province, shared minibuses (dolmuş) connect Rize to highland villages, valleys, and coastal towns. Car rental is strongly recommended for plateau and valley exploration.
