Ayder is a highland plateau above Çamlıhemşin where wooden Hemşin houses sit on steep green slopes, often wrapped in low cloud that rolls in off the Kaçkar range. It's the base most visitors use for day hikes into the surrounding valleys and for soaking in the plateau's thermal baths. In summer it fills with domestic tourists escaping the coastal heat and humidity of Rize city below.
Fırtına Valley follows the river of the same name down from the Kaçkar foothills toward the coast, lined with dense forest and a series of narrow stone arch bridges built for foot and mule traffic long before the road existed. It's the main corridor for reaching Zilkale and the Ayder plateau, and the river itself is used for whitewater rafting trips. Zilkale is a stone fortress set on a rock outcrop in the Fırtına Valley, its walls and towers still largely intact despite no roof or interior floors remaining. Its origins are debated between Genoese and later Ottoman builders, and its position was chosen to control the valley route inland from the coast. There's no ticket booth or staff — you simply walk up and through the gate and climb the interior stairs where they still hold.
Palovit is a tall, narrow waterfall reached by a short forest walk off the road between Çamlıhemşin and Ayder, dropping over a rock face into a shaded pool area. It's a stop most visitors add on while driving up to or back from Ayder rather than a standalone destination. The setting is thick highland forest rather than open pasture, so it stays cooler and shadier than the plateau above it.
