Rize is a verdant Black Sea city in northeastern Turkey, celebrated as the heartland of Turkish tea production. Terraced tea gardens cascade down steep hillsides to the sea, while the Kaçkar Mountains rise dramatically inland, offering world-class trekking, rafting in the Fırtına Valley, and highland plateaus dotted with traditional Hemşin architecture.
Rize has one of the wettest climates in Turkey, receiving over 2,200 mm of rainfall annually — more than some tropical cities. The Black Sea coast keeps temperatures mild year-round (10–28°C / 50–82°F), but persistent cloud and rain are the norm from October through May. Summer (June–September) brings the most sunshine and the best conditions for highland trekking and plateau visits. The Kaçkar Mountains hold snow from October through June.
