Turkmenistan is a fascinating Central Asian nation known for its surreal marble-clad capital Ashgabat, the mesmerizing Darvaza Gas Crater (Gates of Hell), and ancient Silk Road cities. This mysterious country offers a unique blend of Soviet-era grandeur, traditional nomadic culture, and vast Karakum Desert landscapes.
Turkmenistan has an extreme continental desert climate — one of the hottest and driest in the world. Summers are brutal with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in the desert (up to 50°C at Darvaza), while winters bring cold nights down to -5°C or below. The country receives very little rainfall (average 80-200mm annually), and the Karakum Desert dominates 70% of the terrain. Spring and autumn are the optimal travel windows when temperatures are mild and the landscape is at its most pleasant.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: Mar-May
Ideal travel season — the Kopet Dag foothills bloom with wildflowers, temperatures are pleasant (15-28°C), and the desert is navigable. April and May are the peak season for good reason.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Extremely hot — Ashgabat regularly reaches 40-45°C and desert areas can exceed 50°C. Travel is possible but requires careful management of heat exposure. Only Awaza Caspian beach offers relief.
Fall
Months: Sep-Nov
Excellent second travel season as temperatures drop to comfortable levels (20-35°C in September, cooling further by November). Desert landscapes turn golden and crowds thin significantly after September.
Winter
Months: Dec-Feb
Cold in Ashgabat (0-10°C daytime, below freezing at night) with occasional light snow. Desert camping at Darvaza is actually possible and atmospheric in winter but require warm gear. Indoor cultural tourism works well.
