Jinja — Source of the Nile
Jinja sits where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria and begins its run north to Egypt, and the town has built a whole day-trip industry around that fact. You can view the river at the point long claimed as its source, then spend the rest of the day on the water itself — whitewater rafting through the rapids below Bujagali, or a calmer boat trip past the Nalubaale (Owen Falls) Dam. It suits visitors who want adrenaline alongside sightseeing rather than a quiet stroll around ruins or a museum.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Ngamba is a forested island in Lake Victoria set aside entirely for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees, most of them confiscated from traffickers or displaced by habitat loss rather than born wild there. Visitors don't track chimps through dense forest as at Kibale; instead you watch them from viewing platforms and boardwalks as they're fed and move around a fenced forest sanctuary, which makes it a manageable, low-effort day even for visitors not up for a forest hike. It's a sanctuary rather than a wild encounter, and worth going into with that expectation.

Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo is Uganda's smallest savanna park, and its compact size combined with a lack of dangerous grazing animals in most areas is what makes it one of the only Ugandan parks where you can walk and horseback ride among wildlife rather than viewing everything from a vehicle. It's dry acacia country dotted with the lake itself, and it's the one place in Uganda where you're reliably guaranteed zebra, alongside impala, eland, and defassa waterbuck. Coming here as a day trip from Kampala means a long drive for a relatively short time in the park, so it works best paired with an overnight or as a stop en route to Rwanda or western Uganda's bigger parks.

Ssese Islands, Lake Victoria
The Ssese archipelago is a cluster of over 80 islands on Lake Victoria, with Buggala the largest and the one served by the ferry from Entebbe. The pace here is slow: sandy beaches, palm cover, small fishing communities, and none of the wildlife-viewing structure of a national park. As a day trip it's really a beach and boat-ride day rather than a sightseeing itinerary, and the two-hour ferry crossing each way means a return day trip leaves only a few hours actually on the island.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where you can see rhinos, because the species was hunted to local extinction decades ago and Ziwa exists specifically to breed and eventually reintroduce southern white rhinos into the country's national parks. The core activity is rhino tracking on foot with an armed ranger, walking up to grazing rhinos rather than viewing them from a vehicle, which makes for a closer and more active encounter than a typical game drive. It also sits conveniently on the main road to Murchison Falls, so many visitors stop here as a break on that longer journey rather than as a dedicated trip from Kampala.
