Getting Around Uganda 2026

Transport in Uganda decoded — what to use for which journey, and what each option costs.

Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, offers extraordinary wildlife encounters including mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. From the source of the Nile to diverse national parks and vibrant Kampala, Uganda combines adventure, culture, and natural beauty.

Public
Kampala's public transport is an informal matatu (shared minibus) network with no fixed schedules and cash-only fares of UGX 1,000-3,000 ($0.30-0.80). Crowded but cheap for locals.
Taxi
Uber and Bolt ride-hailing apps are reliable and affordable in Kampala ($3-10 most trips). SafeBoda app for motorcycle taxis is faster but riskier.
Rental
4WD self-drive rental from $80-150/day is ideal for national park visits; driving in Kampala is chaotic and not recommended for first-timers
Walking
Central Kampala and Kololo neighborhoods are walkable but hilly. Pavements are uneven — wear flat shoes. Not suitable for long distances.

Use Uber or Bolt apps for all city travel — more reliable, safer, and often cheaper than negotiating with regular taxis

Tip

SafeBoda motorcycle app is the fastest way to navigate Kampala's notorious traffic — always wear the provided helmet

Tip

Avoid travel after dark outside established neighborhoods — if out late, book transport in advance via app

Tip

For upcountry trips, Jaguar Executive Coaches and Link Bus are the most reliable intercity bus companies

Tip

For national park visits, hiring a driver-guide with their own 4WD is often more cost-effective than renting a vehicle yourself

Tip

Book domestic flights with Aerolink Uganda or Eagle Air well in advance, especially for Bwindi and Kidepo routes during peak season

Tip

Boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) are cheap ($0.50-2) for short trips but accident rates are high — use SafeBoda app for registered drivers with insurance
