- June-September: Prime hiking season, clearer skies, drier trails, best for Rwenzoris and Elgon
- Dry Season 2
- December-February: Second dry season, excellent conditions, slightly cooler on higher elevations
- Rainy Season 1
- March-May: Long rains, trails muddy and slippery, forest hikes more atmospheric but challenging
- Rainy Season 2
- October-November: Short rains, some trails difficult, waterfalls at peak volume

What to watch out for on the trail.
Hazard: Altitude sickness above 3,500m on Rwenzori and Elgon — acclimatize properly and descend if symptoms develop
Hazard: African buffalo and elephant on open savannah trails — always hike with a park ranger
Hazard: Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) in freshwater lakes — avoid wading in still water
Hazard: Malaria and tsetse flies in lower elevation and forest zones — use repellent and long sleeves
Hazard: Sudden weather changes at altitude — carry rain gear even on clear mornings
