York Minster, the Cathedral Church of St. Peter in York, England, is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe and took over 250 years to complete in its current form, with construction spanning from 1220 to 1472. The building stands at the centre of the city of York and serves as the seat of the Archbishop of York — the second-highest position in the Church of England after Canterbury. Visitors entering through the west door encounter the nave, one of the widest Gothic naves in England, whose clerestory windows fill the interior with exceptional light. The cathedral possesses the largest collection of medieval stained glass in England, totalling over 100 windows including the Great East Window — the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world at the size of a tennis court — depicting scenes from the Bible and the Apocalypse. The Chapter House, accessible from the north transept, features an elaborate vaulted ceiling without a central pillar, an engineering achievement that continues to impress structural historians. The Undercroft Museum beneath the cathedral displays Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and Viking archaeological remains discovered during foundations work in the 1960s, including sections of the Roman headquarters building (principia) of the legionary fortress that preceded the minster. The Central Tower climb involves 275 steps and emerges at 66 metres above the city with views extending on clear days to the Yorkshire Moors. Evensong is sung by the choir at 17:15 on most weekday evenings and at 16:00 on Sundays, and entry for worshippers attending the service is free. Combined tickets covering the tower climb and the Undercroft Museum provide better value than purchasing separately.
