Alabama is a Deep South state rich in civil rights history, space exploration heritage, Gulf Coast beaches, and some of the South's finest barbecue. From Birmingham's Renaissance to Huntsville's NASA legacy, and from the Civil Rights landmarks of Selma and Montgomery to the white-sand beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama offers a profoundly American story told across diverse landscapes.

Family travel tips
Practical advice for stress-free family trips.
Book Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center 3-6 months in advance for school-age children — summer programs fill quickly
For Gulf beach vacations, bring beach tents and UV-protective swimwear — Alabama summer sun is intense; children burn quickly
Alabama is very car-friendly for families — renting a van or large SUV is recommended for families with strollers, gear, and multiple children
The McWane Science Center in Birmingham offers free admission for children under 2 and is less stimulating than theme parks for toddlers
Many Alabama state parks have junior ranger programs — free ranger-led nature walks that children 5-12 genuinely enjoy
