Tennessee has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The state spans significant geographic diversity: western Tennessee (Memphis) is hot and humid with mild winters; middle Tennessee (Nashville) has warm summers and occasionally cold winters with ice storms; eastern Tennessee (Knoxville, Chattanooga) has slightly cooler conditions; the Great Smoky Mountains experience temperatures 10–20°F cooler than the valleys and receive significant annual rainfall (85+ inches at the highest elevations). Snowfall is rare in Memphis but occurs a few times annually in Nashville and more frequently at mountain elevations.
