Vanuatu is a stunning South Pacific archipelago of 83 volcanic islands offering pristine beaches, world-class diving, active volcanoes, and authentic Melanesian culture. From the bustling capital Port Vila to the remote outer islands, Vanuatu combines adventure and relaxation in a tropical paradise.
Best photo spots
Iconic and lesser-known locations worth shooting.
Mount Yasur Crater Rim, Tanna
The most spectacular photography in Vanuatu — lava bombs exploding against the darkening sky, red glow illuminating volcanic clouds, and the raw power of an active volcano captured in long exposure.
Best time: dusk to night
Champagne Beach, Espiritu Santo
Consistently rated the Pacific's most photographically perfect beach. White sand glows pink at sunrise, turquoise water turns pearlescent, and the pandanus palms create natural silhouettes against the morning sky.
Best time: sunrise 6-7 AM
Matevulu Blue Hole, Espiritu Santo
The extraordinary electric-blue color of this freshwater spring is most vivid when midday sun penetrates the canopy above. Aerial-style shots from the platform above capture the surreal color contrast with surrounding jungle.
Best time: 10 AM - 2 PM
Port Vila Harbor at Sunset
The Port Vila waterfront promenade transforms at golden hour. Iririki Island silhouettes against an orange sky while boats dot the harbor. The Iririki Island hilltop offers elevated panoramic harbor views.
Best time: sunset 5:30-6:30 PM
Mele Cascades Waterfall
A 35-meter waterfall plunging into emerald pools surrounded by tropical rainforest. Long exposures create silky water effects while the morning light filters through the jungle canopy for dramatic backlighting.
Best time: morning 8-10 AM
Underwater Post Office, Hideaway Island
The world's only underwater post office sits 3 meters below the surface, surrounded by coral and tropical fish. Photographing the act of posting a waterproof postcard underwater is a unique image found nowhere else on earth.
Best time: 10 AM - 2 PM
Pentecost Land Diving (April-June)
Young men diving from 30-meter wooden towers with vines tied to their ankles — one of the world's most dramatic and culturally significant photographs. The moment of dive, the blur of the falling body, and the crowd's reaction all make powerful images.
Best time: afternoon on ceremony Saturdays

Light, weather, and seasonal considerations.
- Sunrise

- Mount Yasur crater photography (lava) after 7 PM. Village nakamal candlelit scenes (with permission). Star photography away from Port Vila lights.
Photography tips
Make your shots stand out.
Always ask permission before photographing people, especially in kastom villages — cultural sensitivity is essential and some areas have strict photography prohibitions
A polarizing filter transforms Vanuatu's blue hole and ocean shots by eliminating glare and dramatically increasing color saturation
Bring a waterproof housing or action camera for underwater post office, blue holes, and snorkeling photography
Protect all gear from volcanic dust when visiting Mount Yasur — use sealed bags when not shooting and clean sensors carefully afterward
The lava at Mount Yasur requires long exposures at night (1-8 seconds, ISO 800-1600, f/4-f/8) — a tripod is essential
