Punakha Valley
Punakha was the historic capital of Bhutan and its dzong, set at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers, is generally considered the most photogenic in the country. The valley sits at a much lower altitude than Thimphu, so the drive over Dochula Pass drops you into a warmer, rice-terraced landscape with a noticeably different feel from the capital. It's a full day out and back, and most of it is worthwhile: the dzong itself, a cantilever suspension bridge, and a walk through paddy fields to a hillside temple.

Paro Valley (full day)
Paro Valley is where most visitors land and where Bhutan's best-known sight, Taktsang Monastery (the Tiger's Nest), clings to a cliff above the valley floor. Unlike Punakha, this trip is built around a hike rather than a drive - the monastery cannot be reached by vehicle. The rest of the valley has an easy, low-key day's worth of sights that pair naturally with the hike, from the working dzong to the national museum above it.

Dochula Pass and Druk Wangyal Lhakhang
Dochula Pass is the high point on the road between Thimphu and Punakha, and on a clear morning it gives one of the widest Himalayan panoramas accessible by car in Bhutan. It's really a stop rather than a destination in its own right - most people pass through en route to Punakha - but the temple and chorten field here justify pausing rather than driving straight through.

Gangtey (Phobjikha) Valley

It has a slower, more rural character than the Thimphu-Paro-Punakha circuit, built around a monastery on a ridge and a valley walk below it.

Haa Valley is one of the least-visited parts of western Bhutan, only opened to tourists in the early 2000s, and the route there over Chele La is itself a large part of the appeal - it's among the highest motorable passes in the country and marks the watershed between the Paro and Haa valleys. The valley below has a quieter, more traditional feel than Paro or Thimphu, with two small temples and stone farmhouses rather than a checklist of major monuments.
