Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

All tourists must travel with a licensed guide - independent travel outside Thimphu and Paro is not permitted without a guide arranged through a licensed operator

Tip

Mountain roads are narrow with steep drop-offs, hairpin turns, and no guardrails on many sections. Avoid night driving and always wear a seatbelt.

Tip

Landslides frequently close roads during monsoon season (June-August), sometimes for hours or days. Build flexibility into your itinerary during this period.

Tip

Ask your hotel to book taxis in advance for airport transfers and day trips - taxis cannot be hailed on the street in all areas of Thimphu.

Tip

Altitude changes between Paro (7,382 ft) and Thimphu (7,710 ft) are significant compared to Western cities - allow rest time after arrival before strenuous activities.
